My Life in Advertising by Claude Hopkins (Guest Reviewer Oana Pauna)

Since I am a lucky book contest participant, I won this 50 RON gift card to one library in my country, Romania. Now I have become a full-time freelancer in less than two months, I decided I should simultaneously work and read to get some new knowledge.

I am working as a copywriter both in English and Romanian, so I researched and gathered a list of journalism, copywriting, and advertising books I would read shortly. One of them was “My life in advertising” by Claude Hopkins which I have ordered using that gift card.

Honestly, it was the very first time I was reading such a book, and I was pretty curious to see what his life was. To my surprise, the book caught me from the first pages, and that doesn’t happen very often when it comes to specialized/niche books.

Reading each page has made me hear the voice of Claude in my head and see the whole scenario. Since he lived in the past century his life at the beginning of the advertising was utterly fascinating, but just because I love that century perfume, but because the creativity was bringing truly new things into the world then. Now creativity means taking lots of sources and twisting the info to make it unique, but a century ago the original ideas were creating the future.

Reading his adventures into this new advertising world, while setting the rules for his advertising successors was just fascinating. I can’t describe. Every time I read a couple of lines from this book all my procrastination, demotivation, and desire to lay on my couch magically disappears. It’s like you feel you have such an easy task to do: 500-word articles? 1000-word articles? This is a joke when you compare it with the groundbreaking things he did. He created a new way to sell and promote products. What do we owe him?

We should work with easiness, motivation, and joy because everything is so easy due to his ideas and lifetime work. He introduced new advertising ideas when people would send coupons to get free product samples, or they didn’t know much about product launch and the right way to do it to get high sales. He saved companies we now know as giants: Palmolive, Goodyear, and others.

Reading his thoughts, his ideas, the way the ideas and concepts were getting born in his mind is …how to put it? Inspiring, enlightening. It makes me happier to get back to work, and I feel that everyone passionate about this niche would feel the same.

For me, this is the first book I read to help me in my copywriting projects, but it will not be the last one. Getting in contact with famous people’s ideas trains me more than a long-term course. The advantage is that you choose the amount of information or innovation you can extract from such a book, and not just say “yes” to a trainer or a teacher while following his methods. You get the chance to choose how to act, and how much to learn or dive in the book.

My list is much longer now, and I will buy the other book Claude Hopkins wrote about his methods. I will keep it in a dedicated corner of my giant library, where I will put all the books I will buy, to educate myself for my freelance activity.

I think everyone should learn by themselves, and be an autodidact to achieve success in any niche or domain of this digital world. It makes you think outside the box and get new ideas you didn’t had any idea you are able to create. I read it with excitement and curiosity, as if it was a fiction book with fast action and I couldn’t wait to see what happens next.

Read the book and discover its worth with your own eyes! Or neurons.

Viata mea in publicitate de Claude Hopkins

Citind fiecare pagina pur si simplu auzeam vocea lui Claude in mintea mea si puteam vedea intregul scenariu.

Citindu-i aventurile in aceasta noua lume a publicitatii in timp ce seta regulile pentru succesorii sai in publicitate este pur si simplu fascinant.

Citindu-I gandurile ideile, modul in care ideile si conceptele luau nastere in mintea lor este…Cum sa zic? Inspirational, iluminant.

Citeste cartea si descopera-i valoarea cu proprii tai ochi! Sau neuroni.
