Entering the Freelance Market: What I’ve Learned So Far

The grass is always greener, isn’t it? Who wouldn’t want a flexible schedule; to take the day as it comes; and watch the sunrise with coffee cup in hand? This was my idealized version of what the freelance life was like. So earlier this year, I set about to make my dream a reality. ‘What you think about, you bring about’, said a Las Vegas hypnotist. He wasn’t that far off.

Unfortunately, what most people don’t tell you as they share positive encouragement is that they’re secretly envious. To them, you’ve become your own boss with the freedom we imagine. For me, I’m struggling with building a brand, a reputation on the fly. To quote Ferris Bueller, ‘Life moves pretty fast, you gotta stop and look around every once in awhile.’ And sometimes you get stuck in the mud as you wonder who will respond to the hundreds of resumes, emails, and network contacts you’ve made; who will take a chance on someone new and give them a chance to see what they can do; who will become a client.

I’ve been lucky. It isn’t just who you know, it’s who knows you. Your work becomes your resume. A job well done and a happy client add value.
